I've been on quite a brownie kick recently, because lets be honest...who doesn't love a good ole' fudge brownie. But I always find it fun to switch things up a bit and get creative with the classic treat we all love. On this snowy day, I have decided to try out Betty Crocker's Hazelnut-Mocha Brownies.
These brownies use a boxed mix, which makes for a super easy bake, and adds the flavors of espresso and hazelnut. You get the fudge brownie cake texture with crunchy hazelnuts topped off with a creamy layer of Nutella frosting. Does it get any better than that?
These brownies are so easy to make. You don't even need an electric mixer which makes for easier clean up as well. One bowl mixture (minus the frosting) and you will have a semi-homemade dessert in no time!
Ingredients
Brownies
- 1 box Betty Crocker fudge brownie mix
- 1/4 cup water
- 2/3 cup vegetable oil
- 2 1/2 teaspoons instant espresso coffee powder or granules
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup chopped hazelnuts (filberts)
Frosting
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup hazelnut spread with cocoa
- 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
- 2 to 3 tablespoons milk
Directions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease bottom only of 13x9-inch pan with shortening or cooking spray. In medium bowl, stir brownie mix, water, oil, espresso powder and eggs until well blended. Stir in hazelnuts; spread in pan. Bake 24 to 26 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from side of pan comes out clean or almost clean. Cool completely, about 40 minutes.
- In medium bowl, beat powdered sugar, hazelnut spread, butter and 1 tablespoon milk with electric mixer on low speed until blended. Beat in additional milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until desired spreading consistency. Frost cooled brownies. Let stand about 15 minutes or until frosting sets. Cut into 6 rows by 4 rows.
These brownies were a hit, and everyone was asking for seconds! Keep in mind if you don't like coffee flavor, you can always leave the espresso out. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did!

I always line my baking sheets with parchment paper (or aluminum foil but parchment paper seems to be a bit of a healthier choice). This makes for easy removal of the brownies from the pan, and it makes clean up a breeze!
