Popcorn Night
When Ava is here, we like to have movie nights and hang out as a family. But this weekend, I wanted to try to make movie night a little more exciting and special. Ava and Jay love to eat popcorn when they watch movies, so I thought why not make a bunch of different toppings to create different popcorn flavors?!
This is such an easy and fun activity you can do with the kids. It doesn’t take a lot of time, and it allows your kids to be creative. I found four different dry popcorn spice mixes that we could make and then I let Ava make her own mixture. She loved the idea, and the night overall was a success. It was so much fun having her help us make the mixtures and then mix them into the popcorn. We got to talk about which flavors we liked, and thought of other ideas we could try in the future. The possibilities are endless!
I bought organic popcorn kernals and used our air popper to make a huge bowl of popcorn which we then split up into five smaller bowls. You can use bagged microwave popcorn if you want, but I would try to get a natural flavor since you will be adding your own spices.
I made the spice mixtures while Jay manned the popcorn machine. We then melted butter in a measuring cup, and once the popcorn was ready we poured the butter mixture over with the spice of choice. You can add as little or as much of the mixtures as you want. I halved these recipes because our bowls of popcorn were smaller.
We did two savory (Smoky BBQ and Garlic Parmesan) , and two sweet mixtures (Peanut Butter and Cinnamon Sugar), plus Ava’s creation. Here are the recipes we used.
BBQ Popcorn Seasoning
3 Tablespoons smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
1 1/2 Tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
Garlic Parmesan Seasoning
4 Tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
2 teaspoons dried Italian herbs
Peanut Butter Seasoning
4 Tablespoons peanut butter powder
2 Tablespoon powdered sugar
1 teaspoon salt
Cinnamon Sugar Seasoning
8 Tablespoons brown sugar
4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
Ava’s Sweet Confetti Seasoning
4 Tablespoons sugar
2 Tablespoons sprinkles
All of these seasonings can be saved if you don’t use them all in one shot. Seal in an airtight container and save for next time. If you make the Garlic Parmesan mixture make sure to refrigerate any leftovers in an air tight container.
The flavors tasted great but the overall favorite was the Cinnamon Sugar seasoning. I can’t wait to try some new flavors next movie night!
